Last week I presented to each custodial crew a much more detailed explanation of plans for a revised custodial program. I outlined the challenges we face in providing consistent custodial service at a good value to the University. Guiding FM’s planning and choices are the 3 principles of our custodial program:
I appreciate the direct feedback you provided and the passion you showed about your service at the University. I understand that change can be unsettling and uncomfortable. I know that the revised custodial program implementation will lead to changes for many in what position you bid into (location and shift) as well as how you do your jobs (supplies and task lists). We face real challenges in our consistency and our cost which require changes in how we go about our work for every type of FM position: both front-line staff and supervisors/managers. The University needs us to approach these changes with a positive attitude, seeking to make them successful.
In order to keep everyone informed about the FM’s retooled custodial program, we have created a page on the FM Website (http://www.facm.umn.edu/custodial-program) that will be updated with relevant information throughout the process. A link called “Custodial Program” is also available on the front page of the FM website. Last week’s presentation, responses to frequently asked questions and results from the transportation survey are just some of the information that will be posted on this page. Please check back regularly to keep up with the latest information.

Associate Vice President for Facilities Management Mike Berthelsen created 'Mike's Memo' for the purpose of communicating important information to FM staff. Several times each month he will address current issues that affect the way FM does business.
