How to Connect/Reconnect to a Network Printer

Compass Printers

If you cannot print to a Compass Printer (Stores printing), you can run the automated install of Compass Printers by doing the following:

  1. Double click the Application Explorer folder on your desktop
  2. Then double click the University Tree within
  3. Now double click the Everyone Folder
  4. Double click on the Printer Install Icon
  5. This will reinstall the Compass printers on your Computer
  6. Your computer will reboot when the install completes.

Other Printers

If you cannot print to a regular printer (Not a Stores Printer), you will need to reconnect to the printer. Always try to reboot once, then try again, if you cannot print. If there was an issue with the network, it may not have linked you to the printer and restarting will clear this. If you still cannot print, follow these steps:

Locate your printer name. There is normally a label on the front of the printer or you can look at the printers list attached to identify your printer. The new printer name will be a number similar to 01_005_379_02_HP4500.

For a current listing of printer names and locations go to http://www.facm.umn.edu/fmis/printers1.xls and choose the "Where the printers are and what their names are" option. This opens a 3 sheet Excel spread sheet that shows the printer names and locations by server.

  1. From your desktop, double-click on My Computer

  2. and locate the printers folder and double-click to open it.
  3. From the list of printers displayed choose the one you are trying to connect to and right click on the icon to display this menu. Choose the Properties option by clicking on it.
  4. Choose the Details file tab that is displayed and you will see data similar to this
  5. Click on the Add Port button and on the next screen, press the Browse button
  6. Click once on the plus signs by FACM_1, FACM_2, and FACM_3. The printers are distributed among these servers and you will see the "new printer name" in the list.

  7. Highlight the desired printer to select it
  8. Press OK, then OK again, then choose Apply.
  9. The Printer you selected should now show in the Print to the following Port box.
  10. You can now press OK and the printer properties will close.
  11. Right click again on the printer to show the list of options. If there is a checkmark by Use Printer Offline, click once on it to remove. You should now be able to print
