Process for Adding or Moving Network for FM Personnel
Scope: This procedure should be used when FM is moving staff from one location to another or new a new workspace is being created. It will cover the physical requirements, time line, and staff to be involved.

Process: When staff is being moved or added, the following steps are to be completed by the project lead within the Zone office (this may be CSR or Owners Rep).

  1. Determine if the space has enough electrical outlets to support the machinery that will be installed. At least two, two-outlet power supplies must be available for a PC, CPU and miscellaneous office equipment (calculator, overhead lighting, etc). Add a third power supply if a printer will also be in the space. Each additional equipment addition should have an additional power supply.

Contact your Owners Rep or Zone CSR if you require additional power.

  2. Determine if the space requires the installation of an NTS network jack and/or phone jack.

If the space has not had a PC or printer prior to this move, assume that NTS will need to be contacted for Jack and Phone installation.

If the employee moving into the space previously had a phone number that should move with them, NTS needs to be contacted to move the phone service. At this time, you will also need to determine if you want to add phone service to the employee’s previous spot.

One NTS network jack is required for each networked device. A computer and printer requires two network jacks.

  3. Determine where in your move plan or construction plan, NTS notification must occur.

NTS requires 3 – 6 weeks for new service scheduling

If the installation is to occur during construction, the installation should be scheduled to occur prior to the installation of work surfaces and completion of cubicle electrical wiring as new network wiring should occur when the electrical is being installed.

  4. Verify with the NTS installer the following items during the installation.

IPX is active and working – NTS will know how to do this.

Obtain from the installer and installation sheet, which is normally green and notes the JACK number and the IP address. Retain this for FMIS.

  5. Contact FMIS to schedule date for FMIS to Install and configure equipment. Please have the NTS "green sheet" available for FMIS when we arrive or we will have to contact NTS to verify the addressing. We can normally arrive within 24 hours of notification.

To arrange NTS Service

Go to the NTS web site at http://www.nts.umn.edu/.

Chose Service Order Forms button.

Chose the option you need: ADD, MOVE, MOVE/CHANGE

The Service Ordering Form requires your name, phone department, email and campus mail address. You will also be asked for the JACK Number. The JACK number is the Office or Cubicle number when the service is to be installed. This is shown on a blue print of your area or you can find it printed on the phone/network jack in the area you are installing. It reads similar to 00304 or OC201. If it is a currently unwired location, they simply need the room number and building.

The form will also ask, in the case of network, the EtherJack type, choose ETHJK 10. You do not need a "private network".

You will not need to receive the University of Minnesota Internet Toolkit Software Installed on your office computer – do not select this option.

There is a space for additional information. This is where you can put in to contact the Project Manager or that you want the phone number for this new location transferred from another phone.

You will need to provide the CUFS number for this Service on this form also. This would be the CUFS number of the area that is requesting the service.

When you submit the form, you will receive an order number. Print that screen out for future reference.

NTS will contact the person you noted as contact person in the form prior to implementing the order. You can also contact NTS at 50006 and give them your order number if you need information about when the service will be installed.
