About Energy Management
Oat Hulls ProjectFacilities Management is responsible for managing the university's $70 million annual energy budget and the electrical and steam distribution infrastructure required to light, heat and cool the facilities on the Twin Cities campus. These responsibilities fall into four major categories: energy management, electrical and steam distribution infrastructure, accounting and billing and energy conservation.

Facilities Management’s Energy Management unit coordinates a conservation program designed to reduce and optimize energy use while maintaining or improving building heating and cooling comfort. Every dollar the University spends on energy that could have been saved through efficiency efforts, represents a dollar that the university could have used elsewhere.

You Can Help Conserve Energy, Too
While Facilities Management staff employ technology and energy management strategies to reduce energy use, all University staff can take the following actions to conserve energy:

  • turn off lights when not in use.
  • when purchasing new office equipment, look for those with energy-saving features. Please call Purchasing at 624-2828 for more information about energy saving purchasing opportunities.
  • turn off office equipment and items such as personal computers, coffee makers, fans or copiers before you leave for the day.
  • fume-exhaust fans that do not need to be on after certain hours or on weekends can be programmed to turn off and on through Facilities Management central operating controls system located in the Donhowe Building.

Why conserve energy? Let us show you the impact you can make within your community, for the environment and at your work place.
