Facilities Management's mission is to provide a safe, functional, clean, and welcoming campus. A department of University Services, Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the physical assets of the University to ensure a quality environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors in support of the University’s mission of teaching, research and outreach. What We Do

FM is divided into four main areas of service:

• Central Services - Acts as the clearing house for specialized facilities related services. Comprised of several teams, the unit’s primary purpose is to support FM districts. A single director guides the activities of distinct units, ranging from Landcare to Waste Abatement.
   
• District Custodial and Maintenance Operations - The largest portion of FM services are performed by the department’s three operational districts (East Bank, Health Sciences and St. Paul-West Bank). These cross-functional teams are primarily responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of buildings in their geographical area, with additional support provided by Central Services and Energy Management.
   
• Energy Management - Maintains the infrastructure necessary to heat, cool and light the Twin Cities campus.  They also lead campus energy conservation efforts to help reduce the University’s carbon footprint.

How We Do It

Facilities Management has adopted the 3 C's philosophy of being Customer Focused and Cost Effective while creating a Culture of Accountability.

• Customer Focused - Building strong relationships with students, faculty and staff so that we can anticipate their needs and customize our services to meet them. Focusing on our customers represents a shift away from taking care of the university's buildings and towards caring for the needs of the people and programs in them.
   
• Culture of Accountability - To reach our goal of world class service, Facilities Management determined that there must be accountability at every level of our team. Each FM employee has been given clear expectations and is reviewed annually. At a unit level, FM publishes a monthly scorecard tracking unit progress against performance metrics.
   
• Cost Effective - Facilities Management’s goal is to provide quality service at a competitive price. This entails reviewing all aspects of the operation, from processes to parts, to increase the value we can bring to the university.
