Re: Custodial Benchmarking

Throughout our transformation efforts we have learned the value of setting benchmarks. Creating a set of measures helps in establishing goals, checking progress and getting things done. “Measure what matters” is something we heard from many different organizations.

Recently, we have hired Core Management Services to help us benchmark our custodial service on the Twin Cities Campus. They maintain a "best practice" database of cleaning program information from more than 2700 commercial, educational, and industrial sites. Core will give us an independent, third-party perspective on how clean our facilities are and how we clean them. We can use this information to help improve our services from good to great.

Great Performance - Demissie Fayissa, B&G Worker North West District

Getting a fresh perspective on a situation often leads to creative solutions. A new set of eyes can really lend a “hand.” Think of your home or apartment. You’re in it all the time and don’t notice the carpet stain or the crack in the wall or that uneven floor by the back door. But wait for your in-laws to make their first visit and lo and behold those things pop out. Here’s what a customer said about Demissie’s work.

“I noticed this week that the Dr. Pepper can with straw that has been on the fire box in the SW stairwell between third and fifth floors has been removed as has the pink gunk adhered to the "baseboard" on the same stairwell a few landings down. That can has been here for over 30 years…”

While the customer was exaggerating, she made the point of noticing this small change. Demissie joined the U less then a month ago and has been doing a great job. Thank you Mr. Fayissa for your efforts!

Everyone in FM has to challenge themselves to stay fresh, be open to new ideas and keep moving in the right direction.

Keep up the good work.
Mike
