We all know that access is a difficult problem to solve. One step that we’ve taken to improve it involves a partnership. We will be adding card reader access to the tunnel door from Walter to Smith Hall, as well as adding a strike door to access the tunnel. This route is heavily used on nights and weekends by both faculty and graduate students.
We are partnering with both the Office of Classroom Management and the Chemistry Department to split the costs. This is a win/win/win:
* Easy access – card reader speeds entry for students, faculty and FM
* Better security – strike door can be automatically locked & unlocked
* Cost effective – by piggy-backing on an existing project installation was up to 50% cheaper and completed more quickly than a stand alone project
FM has established a cost pool to tackle door upgrades, and this has allowed us to match contributions by OCM and Chemistry to get the job done. We hope to use this model on other projects around campus.
Great Performance – Maudie Murphy, B&G Worker, St. Paul District
This week’s great performance demonstrates that the little touches we do are noticed by customers and mean a great deal. During our run of sub-zero weather in January, Maudie noticed a customer struggling with her cat in Vet Med. Maudie took a moment and helped the woman button the cat into the woman’s coat and then tucked in the woman’s scarf. Is this earth shattering? No. Did it require much effort? No. Did it make a big difference? Yes. The woman was extremely pleased and Maudie’s efforts were also recognized by the Vet Med staff.
Maudie’s attention to detail elevated the woman’s experience. It’s the impact we can have by opening a door for a customer whose hands are full, smiling as we take a service request or quickly returning a customer’s phone call. None are difficult, all are customer-focused, and they all add up. Thank you Ms. Murphy!
Keep up the good work!
Mike
