Congratulations to Ruthann Manlet for winning a 2009 Pacesetters Award at the APPA (Association of Physical Plant Administrators) Annual Conference and Exhibition in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 8. The Pacesetter Award is bestowed annually upon deserving educational facilities professionals who have made significant contributions within the APPA’s regions or chapters.
The St. Paul Team Manager was nominated for the Pacesetter Award by former APPA Midwest Region President Fred Plant of Valparaiso University.
“People view Ruthann as a go to person and respond positively to her leadership style,” commented Plant in the award application. “She is truly knowledgeable and personable, and people are naturally willing to follow her. In return she is their cheerleader, mentor and supporter.”
An international association dedicated to maintaining, protecting and promoting the quality of educational facilities, APPA represents more than 1,500 learning institutions serving over 4,700 individuals. The organization promotes excellence in all phases of educational facilities management, including administration, planning, design, construction, utilities, maintenance, and operations.
A member of APPA for the past five years, Manlet serves as the Midwest Region’s educational development chair. Mentorship and engagement are two qualities Ruthann was recognized for in the nomination letter. She helps plan the APPA’s annual conference and educational opportunities (both at the conference and within the Midwest region). During the conference, her committee tries to maximize the conference experience for everyone involved.
Manlet appreciates the APPA members that have mentored and tutored her throughout her years of involvement, and tries to do the same for others in APPA and at the U. Fellow St. Paul FM employees Jerry Busse and Sara Smuk are two co-workers that she has taken the time mentor since they started out as custodial student workers.
Ruthann is a perfect example of how an individual can grow and develop their skill sets through their involvement in a professional organization like the APPA. In every sense of the word, she is a true Pacesetter.
