Sigma Pi Fraternity Hosts 3rd Annual Unsung Heroes Dinner
Everyone appreciates being recognized for the work they do. Unfortunately for many FM workers, their customers have gone home before their work day has started.
For the last three years, the Sigma Pi fraternity has hosted an "Unsung Heroes" Dinner for FM's second shift workers in appreciation for the work they do. Sigma Pi Philanthropy Chair Aaron Katz organized this year's event, which was held on April 3 as part of the fraternity's A.C.E. Project (Altruistic Campus Experience) suggested by their national office.
"We wanted to give back to the university and increase our interaction with the community," said Katz. "We don’t have a lot of exposure to the Facilities Management staff."
Second shift FM workers were treated to a spread of burgers (meat & veggie), potato salad, chips, punch and cake as a way of honoring their contributions to the U. The Sigma Pi brothers welcomed FM workers into their house, served them a great meal, played Foosball and thanked them. The meal was funded from the fraternity's philanthropy budget, which comes straight out of the brothers' own pockets.
The idea to recognize Facilities Management staff as "Unsung Heroes" came from a Sigma Pi brother who worked as an FM student worker.
"We wanted to reach out to a group that works really hard for the university to make it look amazing," said chapter President Derek Dahl. "Hopefully taking the time to thank FM employees will inspire others to go out of their way to give these people the recognition that they deserve."
Katz said that the event is a win-win situation. It brings all the brothers together and allows them to show their appreciation for FM, while FM employees get a free catered meal and praise for their work.
