Custodial Changes

Last week I also mentioned that our new budget reality forces changes in the way we take care of the University. Our custodial staff have now re-bid into new positions. Federal stimulus funds will allow us to offer several months of special project employment to staff who didn’t bid into permanent positions. I wanted to thank the members of the custodial pillar project team for planning and organizing such a well run re-bidding process. I would also like to thank our B&G workers. This has been an unsettled time and you have done a good job of working through it. In the next week we will publish all of the new assignments which will begin on August 2.

Maintenance Changes

Last week also brought changes to our maintenance operation. After reviewing our preventative maintenance program we have reduced the required volume of labor required in the Districts. We reduced 29 positions from our District maintenance workforce to our funded levels for FY 2010: eliminating 6 vacant positions, transferring 16 to FM Service/U Construction (beginning July 1), and sending seven individuals to their respective labor benches. We will be using stimulus dollars to stabilize FM Service/U Construction staffing at least through the summer. In addition to stimulus funds, we are building back FM Service/U Construction to take on more projects that can be funded by colleges, HEAPR and R&R dollars.

The maintenance changes also impact our Teamster Mechanics. Due to budget constraints we needed to balance both teams and districts so there will be assignment changes of mechanic positions by district, team, schedule and shift. We reassigned about ten Mechanics to shifts within districts. These new assignments will also begin on July 1.

Again, thanks to all of you for your patience. I am confident that our plan makes the most of our resources and allows us to be good stewards of our campus.
